Figure 9: Walking beyond Safeway to the 400 Main Street Commercial/Office building, the sidewalk remains mostly 9 foot wide up to 12 foot wide. It is the metal bollards and the wall/fountain which narrow the walkability in front of the building’s central plaza to about 6 feet, but that still allows walking 2 abreast. Upon reaching the plaza, the extra setback of that part of the building feels quite expansive and generous. The peek-a-boo view under and through the covered plaza reveals the Lincoln Park gazebo. The large setback of the building at the plaza allows a pedestrian to experience much of the handsome architectural articulation close-up without crossing the street.

At the plaza, the extra set back of this section of the building feels quite expansive and generous. The extra setback allows a pedestrian to experience some of the handsome architectural articulation without crossing the street.

The trees might grow up to block this view eventually. But the visual depth of the plaza will remain. Maybe it will filled with outside dining some future summer.

Because this photo was shot with a wide angle lens, “distance/objects” shown appear to be further away than they actually are to the human eye. The building is not this long.
