LASD trustee Doug Smith rattled off some School Disadvantaged Students Comparison data on Monday, Sept. 16, but did not provide handouts or URLs. He used it to claim that BCS is not “inclusive” compared to comparable schools, and some bond voters will vote down a bond because of this “fact.” Lalahpolitico looked up the source she is familiar with – the California State education site to update her Sept. 9 2012 article, covering 2005 to 2010, with newer 2011-12 data.
The 2011-12 stats at BCS do not look “statistically or significantly different” from those of several schools (e.g., Blach, Gardner) in our district and in other economically segregated suburbs like ours — see Montclaire in Cupertino, see Saratoga. [Mr. Smith may have access to County data for 2012-2013 ,which is not yet available to the general public on the state site. Ummm. Not transparent.]
And at these low percentages, folks, we are talking about differences of a very few students per school. Let’s face it. Our town has geographic economic segregation because of city zoning. We mandate large parcel sizes and have forbidden construction of apartments.
